Introduction: New data just released in October 2021 from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health shows that 40 million in U.S. had a Substance Use Disorder in 2020 which is 14.5 percent of the population (SAMHSA, 2021). Currently, when it comes to family inclusion, there is a gap between policy, guidelines and practice. This article describes the healthcare experiences of family members affected by an individual with a substance use disorder.

Methods: A mixed method study design with both quantitative and qualitative response opportunities was utilized to elicit family perspectives with healthcare providers and services. The quantitative data was enhanced with open ended, descriptive statistics.

Results: Inductive thematic analysis identified key themes including relapse, stress, stigma, medication for OUD, and recovery to target family centered interventions

Conclusion: Family interventions focusing on reducing relapses, providing supports for family stress, addressing stigma, providing education and resources for access to both buprenorphine and naloxone when indicated and a focus on recovery, not abstinence, has the greatest potential in improving outcomes for individuals, their families, and the American population.

Good Luck in Dublin, Ireland, Rochelle!
