Self-love day originated as a holiday in 2008 as a reminder that self-love is one of the most powerful forms of love. Self-love isn’t selfish, it is recognizing that you matter and your needs are important.

Loving yourself allows you to more fully love others and to engage in relationships more fully. Self-Love can help boost our confidence and courage. It can also help us analyze situations calmly without worrying what others may think of us. People that have self-love often develop healthier lifestyles, have more self-esteem, and go after their goals in life. If validation comes from within, negativity from other people is less effective.

What is the History of Self-Love?

In ancient Greece, self-love was considered one of the six types of love. It is also discussed by Christian theologians, philosophers, and psychologists. However, self-love first entered the mainstream psyche and popular culture during the 1950s and 1960s. Popular literature and poems have since discussed the topic in depth. It has helped minorities develop their self-confidence in a society with predominantly White beauty standards in the 1970s.
